Actually, the root issue is that C|Net does not know what THEY are talking about, and the rumor you are referring to originated at C|Net. One of their bloggers didn't have anything productive to do so he wrote an article of pure speculation based on what a supposed buddy at Verizon told him.
C|Net was wrong, their fault - not yours. Most people would assume that something written on a major site like that to be true.
