I reverted my Droid back to 2.2.1 but now I have a new problem

I can't update certain apps like gmail. Normally something like this could be fixed by deleting the system version using Root Explorer, but I can't do that. Is there any way to fix this problem without having to root my phone? The whole point of reverting was to get rid of root.
