The problem there is that both of those phones are just as big, if not bigger than the MAXX. If the OP thinks the MAXX is too big, then those phones will feel even bigger. The Nexus has a bigger screen and is slightly thicker. The Rezound has a screen that's the same size, and it's much thicker. That's why I was saying if the MAXX is too big, there really aren't any other seriously compelling LTE phones on Verizon with a smaller screen size. The Droid 4 comes the closest right now, with the Incredible 4G being a possibility in the near future.
But you're right about going into the store and trying them out. That's something everyone should do unless they know for sure they'll like the size and feel of a phone based on past experiences. Maybe the increased thinness of the regular RAZR would make a difference once the OP tries it out. The thinner a phone is, the easier it becomes to reach parts of a larger screen. If the RAZR doesn't work, the options are very limiting if someone wants a smaller screen.
Edit: jeff70, you removed your line about the Nexus and the Rezound being good options in the few minutes between when I first read your response and when I actually clicked reply to start typing. I should have noticed it in the quoted text while I was typing. That makes the first part of my response appear to make no sense.
