HTC EVO theme change - newbie

I would appreciate some instruction on how to change the overall theme (HTC Sense) . I would like something smoother, more elegant, more customizable, smaller icons, etc... Specifically I don't like the HTC EVO native dock on the bottom of the screen, I find it takes up too much space and is bulky. I'd like maybe to get rid of the dock in all and have a widget dialer or even maybe a search style like widget to type in contacts/phone numbers.
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate your help and time.
