HTC and ASUS May Delay Android Tablet Launches Due to Japan Earthquake Shortages

DigiTimes reported recently that some of their sources within ASUS and HTC say that their forthcoming Android Tablets will be delayed. This is due to supply shortages caused by the catastrophe in Japan. This delay will affect both the HTC Flyer and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, and will probably push their launch into May.

Interestingly, ASUS is still on-track to release the 16GB version of their Transformer at the end of April. Supposedly, only their 32GB version will experience a delay. Also, when reached for comment, HTC indicated that their tablet roadmap was unchanged, but didn't offer any timetable to compare.

On a separate note, the same article suggests that sales of the Motorola XOOM have been lower than expected, and that this was another reason manufacturers were delaying their product launches. There has been no comment from Google or Motorola at this time.

IMHO the Xoom's lack of success is the pricing. Yes, it has more features than the iPad, but it is too expensive. They need to beat the iPad at the price point. Undercut them by at least $100 is a start. Does anyone honestly think that the price of the Xoom will stay the same when other tablets with similar or better features hit the shelves? Doubtful at best. As many people have said previously, the Xoom doesn't exactly have prime real estate in retail stores such as Best Buy. Being prominently displayed wherever it is sold will also help.
