If you go to Settings-Wireless Networks-Mobile Networks, the first option allows you to toggle between CDMA/LTE or just CDMA. The phone should switch automatically, mine right now reads 3G but I haven't switched it.

As i understand, if you are not in a 4g area, switch it to CDMA, otherwise it sucks the life out of your battery looking for both.

have you tried extended controls widget? I believe it has a 3G/4G toggle.
