How to manually boot into clockwork mode?

I know I've seen it discussed here but the search really didn't help me find-how do I manually boot into clockwork mode? Tried installing a new battery icon for rooted GB and now when droid x reboots it continually for closes things like swype gmail voice search...and I can't do anything with the phone. So I need to manually boot into clockwork so I can reflash. Help!

power phone off
plug into wall charger
a large battery will pop up on the screen
unplug
power on and it should boot into clockwork

I power off, then hold volume down button and power on and it goes to kooshs recovery everytime.
