Text messages work on all phones. We use that.

You may want to check with your cellular provider. That might be the problem.

Anything with data can go over wifi but imessage uses sms for texts to droid and data apple to apple but pictures use data iMessage to droid. It would be nice if they could make texts have an option to use data instead of cellular like apple iMessage does apple to apple. Other apps that use pure data work fine.

We have an iPhone and an Android phone, and they usually communicate back and forth and with other people's phones without any trouble. That's why I think you should talk to your cellular provider. Ours is T-Mobile.

I think some of you are missing the point here? Or maybe I am. I thought he didn't have cellular on the T2

Yes, I believe you are right, PereDroid. Smyth is trying to send text messages without having carrier/phone service. Typical text messages don't work over wifi only. They need phone service to work.

There are some text apps that do work over wifi only and as "me just saying" mentioned, Google voice also can send texts over wifi only. When my son was over seas (because we didn't want to pay the outrageous price for international service), we used a texting app that works over wifi... except I don't remember what that app was. Try searching the play store.

I am talking about the strange way regular text messages behave over wifi. Text won't sent but pictures will as I assume pictures need data. So I think if you send a picture with text at the bottom you can text over wifi but if it's just text it won't work. I am only talking about native texting apps not alternatives like Google voice or Facebook etc etc

Actually, I believe pictures won't send over wifi either... but also need a data plan when using stock messaging apps.
