How do you "Pick Up a new Phone"?

I don't get it..people always just "pick up" new phones when they come out, I mean how? Do you like buy the phones without contracts or what? I mean come on, it makes no sense..Either these people are rich (lol) or they are doing something i'm not aware of...inform me?

A little of everything goes on but nothing secret or helpful unless your situation matches theirs.

Some use their "new every 2" upgrade. Some do an 'early upgrade' (get it at contract price but no $100/$50 NE2 discount). Some have family plans with multiple phones and multiple NE2/early upgrade opportunities. Some will add a line for $10/month to get the new phone at the contract price and be stuck with a second line for 2 years (sometimes still cheaper than paying full price for a phone). Some will sell the current phone on ebay for a couple hundred bucks and buy the new one at full price. Some have corporate discounts through their jobs that help bring the cost down. And of course some just have the disposable income to buy a new one when the want it.

Early Upgrade?

How do you get an early upgrade? I understand you may have to pay more, but what about the contract that comes with it? Does it add to your current two years?

Early upgrades are available at 16 months I believe instead of the full 2 years for "new every 2". An early upgrade is instead of waiting until your NE2 benefit. You will have to extend your contract another 2 years and you will have to wait another 2 years for your next NE2 discount. You will get the phone at the contract sign-up price and be able to take advantage of any sales or promotions (that don't specify "new" customers only) but you will not get the additional $100 off or $50 off (depending on your plan) for the NE2.

I rarely use my NE2 because I don't want to wait and because I have a small minute plan since I do more texting than talking and only get $50 off for NE2. I usually do the early upgrade.

Always check all available outlets too as the prices and promotions will vary quite a bit; VZW stores, VZW online (usually best deals in my experience), Best Buy, other online outlets. You should be able to take advantage of the early upgrade from any reputable outlet.

A friend I know got a Verizon phone recently and opted to pay more for the phone but only have a 1 year contract because he doesn't want to get stuck with a phone for 2 years.

yup, there's always that option. In the VZW stores they usually have the 1 year price in small print on the little info cards. Sometimes it can be quite a bit more though. A couple of years ago I got a Samsung i760, the 1 year price was $200 more than the 2 year and the early cancellation fee was only $175 so it made sense to go 2 years.

That and I've had my phone number and account longer than Verizon has existed, almost 15 years, and have no plans of leaving anytime soon. I was a PrimeCo customer from the beginning in late '95 and was assimilated when the baby Bells and GTE merged. I kinda miss that little alien...

actually verizon will allow you to do an early upgrade on the primary line after 12 months on a 24 month contract and you still get the 2 year pricing. By doing this you forfeit your NE2 discount

good to know, I thought it was 16 months. That's what I get for listening to VZW store commissioned sales reps I suppose.

yeah they tell you when you can upgrade to also get the NE2.

its kinda nice for me and my girl since were on the same plan but our phones upgrade 6 months apart so every 6 months one or the other gets a new phone.

I know I sound like a broken record, but verizon offered me an extra early upgrade the beginning of april. (they sent me an email) I wasn't up for the 12 month option until Nov of this year.

I think it was some promotion they were or are having.

Now, do verizon do the $10 add a line? Cuz if they do......its on.

But then your locked up for 3 years?.. can you get a NE2 2 years into the 3 years?.. if you kept upgrading early wouldnt you eventually have a ridiculously long contract?

I thought the early upgrade was 16 months out of the 24. But on my verizon account online it says im due for an upgrade in March of next year. So can i still get an early upgrade in December of this year since i've had the droid for a year?

lol. No, the contact is a new 2 year one. Technically u could look at it like that. But I didn't have to upgrade. U could just wait til your contact is up and go from there.

It's supposed to be 16, but I think they are having some kind of smart phone promotion.

Looking at the phones that verizon will be getting soon, it will be hard not to upgrade early XD
