How do I turn on the screen during a phone call to set speaker?

I need help. I'm running a Droid RAZR that has recently be downgraded to ICS. Android 4.04. During my last phone call I needed to turn on the speaker phone but swiping the screen would not turn it on so that I could select the speaker button. How do we turn the screen on during a phone call?

Bringing the phone down from your ear should light the screen up automatically and if it don't I would think the power button or home button would do it also.
