How do i get my droid x to connect to the tv so I can warch tv shows streamed?

I have a vizio and it has hdmi but everytime I plug my phone into the
Hdmi port all I get is a blue screen. I'm on the right channel hdmi one and I'm getting nothing. I also downloded an hdmi app. Still no luck.
