How do I access my contacts during a phone call

Ok so I was trying to get a number from my contacts while I was talking to my wife. I put her on speaker phone and I was trying to open the contact tab. I could hear her but she did not hear me and I lost the call. Any Help for me???

I just answered this question yesterday. While on the call press the home key, and then press your contacts.

Now, if your phone is like mine, as soon as you hit the menu button and bring your finger to the screen, the screen turns off. If you move your finger away - screen turns back on. lol. Even if you quickly touch the screen, it turns off right away.
