How do effectively merge contact types?

I have two different lists (databases) of my contacts. One is listed "phone" and the other is listed "Google". How do I sync these or create them as only one database? Each time I go to edit a contact I get a choice of the two or the contact is only in one database. Would anyone have an idea on how to clean up this mess?
