How Can I Stop Facebook Updates from Being Received as Text Messages?

I noticed on my latest bill that I was charged for 54 received text messages. I receive probably 5 or so ACTUAL text messages from people I know. I am thinking the remaining messages are the Facebook updates that are sent to my phone. How can I stop FB updates from being sent to my phone as text messages, so that I can avoid these charges?
