Hey, folks

Just came across an announcement from HomePipe about their Android app:

Looks to be a really promising app and system, particularly with the iTunes streaming feature.

Anybody out there tried this yet and have any comments?

Saw it a few days ago and figured I'd try it out. Heres my opinion: it looks pretty and is good for non-techie people but it has very limited directory access (it can only access stuff in your profile/home folder).

I dual boot windows/linux and run linux mostly, I have ssh setup (which includes the sftp [secure ftp] protocol) and it provides 100x more functionality, granted I have to use 2 separate programs: one for ssh and one for sftp, and its not nearly as pretty.

If all you want is access to stuff in your home folder and youre using windows or mac (about 97% of the pc market), homepipe is great. If you want more just install a simple ftp server like filezilla.

Yeah, I'm also disappointed they do not support Linux or PowerPC based macs. I use Ubuntu and Leopard for my two main computers. My mac is the file server.

Whats HomePipe? looks like a sharing site, like limewire perhaps?

HomePipe isn't limited to your profile/home directory, this is simply what it defaults to when you first install it.

You can actually share out (only to you or to other people) any folder on your computer, or on your network. It's up to you how much you share and with whom.

edit: an app like this has music, video, and pictures in mind. it's great for music since it opens up your whole library, but for videos it's very slow. you have to download each file individually and then you don't even know if the video is the correct format.

for music and pictures this app works great. videos, definite no, imo.
