Help!

I am not sure what to do. I bought an already rooted droid 4. It worked fine for the first 2 weeks but then little things started happening. The phone has been locking and freezing on apps- it is constantly asking me to "report" wait or close. This has progressed to the home screen doing it as well. Sometimes the phone just goes completely black and only the bottom lights up. I have to push and hold the power button and the down volume button to get it to reset. And then at start up the greeting sputters and echoes (ddddrrrroooooidddd) and sometimes I have to hold the down volume button to get it to got past that. I've noticed that the call quality has dropped off dramatically and sometimes it takes a couple moments before I can hear the other person and even then it cuts in and out. I don't know that the two functionality issues are related. I was using GoLauncher EX but have completely removed it thinking it was part of the problem with freezing. The camera has completely stopped working. I push it and the screen goes black and then force closes. I have tried updating the super user version I have installed and it says its up to date.I have installed CacheMate to clear the cache as most sites suggest but it doesn't seem to help the problem. I did a factory data reset as someone suggested but it didn't appear to fully reset. The font that I had installed via ROM toolbox(which was deleted from the reset) was still on the device and so was the superuser app. This did not cure my problems either. Any suggestion or point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I still like the phone but I wish that I could get it be completely functional.

Wow, that's a hefty list of issues. That's never fun. If it's a hardware issue, which typically it isn't, then there's not much you can do. Maybe perhaps the user who rooted it for you did something they shouldn't have.

If you've already rebooted, wiped cache, and performed a factory reset, there's really only one solution left. You'll need to fastboot your phone back to the official ICS release. This will make your phone out of box condition and remove root entirely (you can reroot if you desire afterwards)

Firstly, make sure you have a full battery. If you botch up fastbooting and your battery dies, you will be in a world of hurt. Make sure you have both the latest motorola usb drivers and the program RSDlite which you can find in this thread here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=206972

And grab the ics sbf file at:
goo.im/devs/Hashcode/maserati

And follow the instructions from the linked thread. If the fastboot is successful and the problems persist you may be looking at a faulty phone.

Good luck

Thanks. I will definitely attempt this. It was strange to me that the phone did not completely reset when I did the factory data reset. It didn't remove the superuser app but it removed everything else, including titanium backup and the ROM toolbox lite I was using for a font change on the phone. I thought it odd that the font itself was also not removed, even when the app that I got it from was. The camera worked briefly but then completely went back to not initializing. I had wanted to avoid going back to stock because I am not sure how confident I am in re-rooting the device on my own. I really do miss the camera though so I think that it might be my best bet.

Factory Reset is a very misunderstood feature/function. It does not reset the phone to "out of box" configuration/software.

All it does is wipe your configured settings. That's it. Your Gmail account info is wiped, your downloaded apps are wiped......any configurations you have done are "reset" back to needing to be configured.

It does not touch any section, folder, file on the phone that a normal user would not have access. Superuser.apk sits in /system/app so a Factory Reset cannot, will not touch it. If you've installed Fonts, they probably installed in a system folder as well....so Factory Reset cannot touch it.

If you've deleted apps or replaced apps in /system a Factory Reset will not restore the original apps either......this is what usually bites people when an OTA upgrade is pushed....OTA's patch original system files and if they are missing or have been replaced then the patch fails making the entire upgrade fail.

As suggested......flashing the stock 4.0.4 image would be an excellent idea....especially since an OTA is going to be pushed out very soon to upgrade the phone to 4.1.2.

tcrews.... your first name isn't tom is it?......anyhow just getting around to stock rebooting. I am running android 4.0.4 are there different instructions?

I used to work with at Tom Crews at Verizon... he was out of our Ocala FL store

Not me...but then there are two other Tom Crews's in my state (SC) that I am not related to as well.

Thanks for both of your help. I was able to flash stock and then upgrade to jellybean. It seems to have fixed all my issues. So happy with my phone again!
