help with transferring/opening files

So I recently got a Droid Incredible. Its my first smart phone, and I am still trying to figure it out. One thing in particular is using the phone as a flash drive to transfer files. I got so far as connecting the phone to my PC via the USB cable, making a new folder, and putting 4 documents in it. Now the problem is I cannot find where they are on my phone. Do I need to get an app to manage them? If so what is a good app? Also, i'm not even sure if i transferred the files correctly so any and all help would be greatly appreciated(layman terms please)

Most files need an app to go along with them, Depending what type of files you transfer and its usually the only way access/find them without getting too technical.

I use Astro file manager. Best manager you can get in my opinion and its free.
