Help with modifying handcent

Anyone want to help me figure out how to modify handcent? I've tried myself like 6 times today and failed miserably.

You know the custom notification icons? I tried to put some of the real emoticons in there. Like my gf loves cows. Wanted that to be hers. Work a crying one etc. So I extracted the apk dropped in what I wanted but names changed to what I knew to be the stock custom icon names. Zipped back up. Won't even install.
