help unlocking a thunderbolt?????

someone got my brother inlaws phone and tried to unlock it several times and it got locked up is there a way to unlock and save without erasing everything? he has the pattern lock he has forgot his gmail and password. trying not to make a trip to verizon

Unfortunately, you will need to do a hard reset on the phone once you go through the activation process you will be good to go. But this will erase everything. If you have backup asst. your contacts will be saved. Relog into gmail and also if you go onto android.com and log into Google there with your gmail address and go to the market area you will find all the apps you have downloaded
