Help! Replaced digitizer and now phone wont power up

The soft keys on my Rezound were getting less and less responsive so I decided to replace the digitizer. I'd done this procedure successfully in the past on another Rezound and it went smoothly but upon reassembly the phone won't turn on. If the phone is unplugged with the battery inserted and I press the power button I can feel the vibrator react for a second but that's it. If I plug in the charger the charge LED will light up for about 8 seconds but nothing else. If I plug the phone into my computer the computer doesn't notice at all. The ribbon cables are fully inserted (BTW the contacts on the ribbon cables should be facing up correct?). What the heck could I have screwed up?

Is there any way to be sure that the problem is in the screen/digitizer/connection vs something with the motherboard? Should it be possible to get it to boot up without the screen or digitizer connected so I can at least connect via USB and retrieve some data from the phone?
