hdmi output not working

So I tried to get the hdmi output to work with my sharp Aquos TV. So far miserable failure. When I connect the hdmi cable to my TV and go to the picture gallery, nothing on the TV. Is there a manual for the Droid X anywhere? Input 4 on my TV is a dedicated HDMI so I shouldn't have to setup on the TV.
I also tried using Real HDMI and got a picture with mostly lines and scratchy audio when there should be no audio.
Since Motorola offers this feature, shouldn't they have instructions somewhere?
Any help appreciated.

Thank you very much! Apparently when I click on a picture there is a teensy HDMI icon in the upper left corner. I clicked on it and it didn't work. But then I had something to work with. I went to Menu ->Settings -> HDMI and tried every option and it turns out that Auto does not work, but 480p does. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/images/smilies/dancingDroid.gif That link for how to do movies is great! Will have to try.
