HD video - will it be HD on my TV through the hdmi cable?

If I play an hd video on my phone with a greater resolution then the phone will it show up in HD on my tv through the hdmi cable?

I hooked mine to a 52inch and its not what I call HD. It is watch movies but the picture is not 100% clear.

It's supposed to be able to output 720p to a TV through the hdmi port.

Motorola claims that the X2 HDMI out is 1080p.

My TV will only accept up to 1080i. When I tried it looked more like 480i, if that, gave up on this...
