I never had this problem with my blackberries in the past but I noticed that outside in the sun its very hard to see the screen. Is that typical for most smart phones now? And is there anything that can be done to help?

I don't know of anything stock, assuming you don't have your screen manually turned down. But if you own Juice Defender Ultimate ($5 and well worth it, imho) under Controls>Brightness you can set the max brightness to 150% for times like that. I was outside with mine yesterday and it was a sunny day. I actually thought about the fact that I could read my screen without problems and wondered if JD was boosting it up. (Btw, if you want JD Ultimate, you first install the free version, then install the paid Ultimate app.)
