Haptic feedback shuts off

Haptic feedback is randomly shutting off on my phone. Usually I'll be typing a text or email and after a few letters its off. The quickest way for me to get it back is to actually tap the back of the phone, which strongly leads me to believe this is a hardware issue. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, did you devise any methods to solve it? Thanks!

My Thunderbolt is also doing this. It usually happens after typing 2 lines worth of words. Happens during email, text, Facebook, etc. Does anyone know of a fix? (other than a new phone?)
