New to the forums, glad I've found them! Read on a thread about using Handset SMS to attach specific text message tones to a contact, and it worked. Then I read to silence droid sms notifications, after hearing two tones when I got a text. That worked. My questions are :

Can I inactivate the Droid sms some how to eliminate seeing two alerts at the top bar of my phone?

I want to get different tones for SMS than factory, how can I do this? Is there an app?

TIA for putting up with a new Droid owner! (BTW, Droid X is my phone)

Welcome to DroidForums!! What you need to do is open the default messaging app, hit menu, settings, and uncheck notifications.

Yes

I found some tunes that I would like to SMS sounds (for ex one is a cow moo'ing, and the other is a shot gun blast). I don't know how to get them to appear in my SMS list?

What comes up as notification options? If you want notifications for individual people, you'll need to do that in contacts.

Contacts -

When I'm in the handset app, and I'm in a conversation, I got to settings>notifications>sounds, and it is the factory SMS tones (like 10 or 12 of them).

When I first open Handcent (thread view), hit menu, settings, notification settings, I have an option for system ringtones and for music. You don't?

They should save there automatically. If not, two apps will help: Androzip and Ringdroid. Both are free in the market.
What does it list when you chose music though?

It lists 'Facebook pop'. It doesn't list the two custom ring tones that I downloaded.
