Handcent notifications won't dismiss after JB 4.1.2 update?

I recently updated my Verizon Motorola RAZR to Android v4.1.2 (system version 98.72.16.XT912.Verizon.en.US). Handcent is my primary/default SMS app, and the stock messaging app notifications have been turned off. After that update to 4.1.2, the Handcent notification in the status bar will not go away. I can dismiss it by swiping, and it will disappear for ½-2 seconds, but then will reappear saying I my most recent 200+ messages are unread. When I go into the app itself, none of the messages appear to be unread.

How can I make Handcent begin acting correctly?

Try clearing app data for Handcent or uninstalling and reinstalling. Back up your texts first though.

In that case it may just be a bug with Handcent and 4.1.2. I've had the issue you described before and clearing app data fixed it. I'd email the Handcent devs and report it to see if others are having the same problem.
