is this the real deal?

there's an article kind of describing the difference between gingerbread and froyo at computersight.com .. it said that verizon is also planning to release updates over the next few months to a select amount of their customers as a way to keep track of bugs before they do an official roll-out. what i want to really know though is this the real deal or just another modified rom like the article describes?
