Verizon issued an internal note that basically says that not all Android devices in its lineup will be upgraded to Gingerbread. Verizon apparently needs time to assess “which devices will get Gingerbread in the coming months.” Naturally we expect all high-end smartphones to get Google’s new OS but that won’t happen anytime soon. As for the cheaper, older, or not so popular Android devices that Verizon is still selling, well those devices will probably not see any kind of upgrade yet.

In case you’re considering buying an Android handset from Big Red but want one that’s surely going to get Gingerbread down the road, well, we don’t have any idea which device will get Android 2.3. The Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, the Motorola Droid 2, the Motorola Droid Pro, the Motorola Droid, the Samsung Continuum or the Samsung Fascinate seem like the usual suspects when it comes to this particular upgrade.
The Droid is a rather old handset, but still one of the best selling Android handsets ever, and the Droid Incredible will be reaching EOL in March. Will that affect any potential Android 2.3 upgrades?
Verizon has already sold plenty of original Droid and Droid Incredible handsets, and their owners would certainly be entitled to running Google’s latest OS on their smartphones. But according to the leaked note above, Verizon is still unsure what handsets will be blessed with an update.
Handsets like the LG Ally, the Motorola Ally, the LG Vortex or the Motorola Devour might never get the Gingerbread upgrade their owners are waiting for. But, just like we said earlier, nothing official from Verizon would prove that any of the handsets above would be skipped by the upcoming Android 2.3 update.
