Google Talk friends list showing offline

Every time I sign on to Google Talk through my phone, it shows everyone normal as it should, but after a few uses or maybe 5 minutes later, all my friends are shown as offline and stay that way till I sign out and sign back in again, only to appear online for another 5 minutes. So basically it just always shows my friends as offline. I can still send them messages, its just unbelievably annoying to see nobody as online. Any ideas? The Google Talk forums have been closed and their help site is god awful so I couldnt find anything there...

i have similar question: I sent a test message to someone who has Google email address but it shows he is offline. What is required for the receiver to get the message?
