The Pixel and Pixel XL are great phones, but for most don't warrant the high price tag. That being said Google is looking to keep their phone's in the "luxury" category next year with the next generation of Pixel devices meaning they will stick with the high price tags. It is to Google's benefit to get as many phones in the hands of as many people as possible as the idea is to give internet access to all so they can search more and Google can be paid more for ads.

They have been working on getting cell phones in the hands of those who live in emerging markets with the Android One program. Now it seems that Google will be partnering with Reliance Jio to produce an affordable smartphone for India. Reliance Jio is one of the fastest growing cellular networks in India. They amassed more than 100 million subscribers in just 170 days. The new phone would work specifically with the Reliance Jio 4G network. I would love to see Google do the same in the US, but it isn't likely.
