It seems that the Carrier IQ privacy drama has drawn the attention of some heavy hitters. Google's Chairman, Eric Schmidt, himself, came forward denouncing Carrier IQ. He indicated that Google does not support or endorse the company Carrier IQ in any way. Google's Eric Schmidt is the latest to make a formal statement on the matter. Here are some of his comments during an Internet freedom conference in the Dutch city of The Hague:

“It’s a key-logger, and it actually does keep your keystrokes, and we certainly don’t work with them and we certainly don’t support it,” Schmidt said during a recent conference. “Android is an open platform, so it’s possible for people to build software that’s actually not very good for you, and this appears to be one.”

As a brief reminder, Carrier IQ made headlines over the past few weeks when a security expert came forward indicating that the company installed tracking software on millions of smartphones. It caused an uproar around the web, and a slew of companies, including Verizon, came forward denying any affiliation with them. In fact, several class-action lawsuits have actually been filed against the company since the story broke.

You know you have garnered some negative attention when a "Big Cheese" like Eric Schmidt comments on you. Things are looking very grim for Carrier IQ.

Whatever negative consequences Carrier IQ suffers will be well deserved.

From the video I saw of the guy analyzing the carrierIQ app on his phone it looked like it was a pre-installed app that you can't remove. So either htc or the carrier knew beforehand what this app was exactly and what it did. CarrierIQ might just be doing it's job so if it wasn't carrierIQ it would've been some other company. But htc and/or the carrier for that particular phone is just as guilty because they knew what they were installing on the phone.

Talk about an interesting turn of events for CIQ. I think the biggest lesson learned through all of this is that anti-virus apps truly are useless. If they worked like most AV software, CIQ would have been discovered long ago.

Even better was the beloved iOS having it in their system too. Wonder how many pockets they padded to get that in there.

Dember 14th is coming up. That is when they are supposed to reply to the senators letter. Hopefully their replies are nice and public.

Yep! It was great to tell all my iPhone friends about it, then have them say how almighty apple would never put something like that on... Then tell them! ;)

Swyped and sent through the interwebz directly to you from somewhere and some device that doesn't concern you!

you can bet that if legislation fails here the hacker groups certainly won't. Anything they get out of this in the way of punishment is truly deserved.
