GDE vs Home++

I've been using GDE with the Hero theme for about 3 weeks now. GDE came out with an update last night and I have had 5 FC's now. I appreciate app devs but I can't fathom why they would release an update that is hosed......Looks like I am going to try Home++

What is the best way to find Home++ in the Market. If you use Androlib, can you provide a link?

type home++ in the search bar...

That's pretty insulting. Do you think he doesn't have the intelligence to just type home++ in the search bar? Obviously, he asked because it doesn't give you home++ right away when you type that, it gives you a bunch of different themes/skins first.

I had to google Home++ and put androlib in it before I got a direct link. Here it is: Home++ beta v0.8.0.7.4 Application for Android | Lifestyle

this reason alone is why the Market needs to be revamped. Searches aren't precise and apps get buried in a list of crap IMO.

I have GDE and Home++. I tried GDE out for about a week, and I still try it for a bit after every update. In terms of speed and stability it just does not compare to Home++. I was trying to show off my droid to a friend who was thinking of purchasing and was running GDE at the time. Her husband was watching, and I agreed with him, that the phone looked a bit sluggish. I was like just a sec, switched to Home++, and asked, "how bout that?" vastly improved their impression of the phone.

GDE is incredibly sluggish after unlocking my phone. It speeds up a bit if I'm using my phone actively for awhile, but when I need to open apps quickly is right after I unlock my phone. Having to wait for the screen to draw so I can open Maps or Email is just silly. It also force closes frequently, and occasionally is totally unresponsive.

GDE is for flash. If you don't mind waiting for apps to load, the screen to rotate, and dealing with force closes, then you might be able to deal with GDE. It honestly does look great, and I was enamored enough with the visuals for a short time that I was willing to put up with it, but I need my phone to be ready to go when I am. I will applaud the developer though for being very active and providing updates regularly. It has sped up quite a bit since I first installed it a month ago via updates, but it still has a lot of problems that reduce its functionality. I'm aware it is in beta and hopefully the developer can iron out all the bugs. However, I don't believe in paid betas, which is what GDE is.

Home++ is fast, minimal, offers up to 7 screens, and has the wraparound workstation. It supports animated widgets out of the box, which as far as I know, no other home replacement does. Also the power strip provides more function than any launcher for the other home replacements. Each button has short press and long press functions, very intuitive. Holding the app launcher button takings you to Application settings.

Home++ is still in beta, and is incredibly fast and functional. The design is minimalistic, and not skinnable(at the moment), but the developer is very active with updates and may add theming elements in the future.

My recommendation, try Home++ first. If you're really curious about GDE, DL it try it out, return it if you don't like. Its only $2 bucks or so.

adam8ch I have to disagree with ya, after the last update with GDE I have not had one force close and the speed is much better. It really comes down to personal preference. I have found that the main issue with GDE force closing or running slow is usually attributed to various widgets not playing nice with GDE.
Home++ is great as well, and has some great features in it. Personally I did not care for it. But that is just a matter of personal opinion. I say let do your research on what will work best for you, what you like, try them all. And keep the one that works the best for ya and the one you like the best.

Not playing nice with certain widgets is GDE's fault, not the widget's. If that app works fine w/ default home or home++ it is the responsibility of the developer to make sure their home replacement is equally compatible.

Edit: Of course it is a matter of personal opinion. Mine just happens to be that GDE is unsatisfactory. :) I did say you should try it out if you're curious :P.

Rogro (the developer) does provide support for GDE, and he updates it quite often. And as for it being all GDE's fault for some widgets not working is not entirely true. It could be bad coding on the Widget Developers behalf as well. What ever the reason is, I am sure it will get better. And do not try to pretend that Home++ is 100% stable either, nor is panda home, or Ahome etc... they all have room for improvement. Home++ has its share of problems as well. That is why it still has the "beta" attached to it. Try taking off the cube or stretch effect in GDE. It flys just as good as home++. GDE has more going on with the transitions then Home++ does so I am sure that he has more to deal with for fixing bugs.

+1 They all have their own quirks/issues. Try em all and pick the one you like. :icon_ banana:

I've tried w/ stretch and normal, still not as good as Home++ in my opinion. Home++ isn't 100% stable, but better than GDE, in my opinion. I'll quote myself here regarding GDE.

I will applaud the developer though for being very active and providing updates regularly.

You're welcome to disagree with my opinion. Don't need to take it personally though. I look forward to when GDE is not so buggy :P

I am not taking anything personally ;) I enjoy a friendly debate from time to time. But you are entitled to your opinion as I am mine. As we are both entitled to respectfully agree to disagree :icon_ lala:
