I'm beginning to get extremely frustrated after using almost 10 kernel and rom combinations. All have gotten me only around 8 hours of battery life clocked at 800mhz. The best I've gotten is 10-12 hrs from Lithium Mod.

GRRRRRRRRRR

Yesterday I purchased a $5 battery from amazon because I've had my droid for 14 months now. I'm waiting for that to arrive next week.

Could it be the battery thats crapping out on me or the roms+kernel+droid itself?

have you tried resetting your battery stats? it worked wonders for me..i literally was getting 5 hours with no usage (yes...no usage, screen off the entire time)...and resetting the battery stats led me back to 28 hrs with moderate use.

it works trust me

go to data>system>and delete batterystats.bin after you've charged your phone to 100%

I've found that the Kernel/Rom combination has not had a significant impact on battery life. I've used a lot of both and battery life has always been about the same. The most important impact to battery, for me, has been settings and use habits.

Here's my tips:

1. (Doesn’t apply to all phones) Go to settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks/Enable always-on data. Uncheck always on data. Your phone will still receive email, text, & phone calls as before as well as internet usage but your battery will last a lot longer.

2. Emails: I don't know what email app you use, but try this. It saves battery power and in some cases emails arrive quicker. This scheme will have you using only the Gmail app on the phone for all email accounts whether they are pop3 accounts or Gmail. Go to the Google Gmail inbox on your computer and log into the Gmail account. On the top right of the screen is an option called Settings. In there is an option to have the Gmail program poll your regular, non-Gmail accounts. Provide the email address and the password. The Google Gmail program will then poll your other accounts on a frequency from 1-5 minutes and push the email immediately to your phone. The polling frequency is determined by each account's activity - more emails = faster polling. It will always be no less frequent than every five minutes. This saves battery power because on the android OS pop3 accounts are polled at a frequency of 1-30 minutes and that really eats battery. Because the phone goes and checks those accounts for mail whether there is mail there or not.

3. If you are using Live Wall Papers, stop!

4. Use wifi any time it is available. It uses a lot less power than 3G and it is much faster.

5. If there are widgets that automatically update (facebook, weather, etc.) change their update frequency in their settings menu. Set them to 30mins or 1 hour.

6. Oh, almost forgot, get the extended battery from Verizon.

7. Turn off the GPS unless you are actually using it. There are some background apps that can burn a lot of power via a live gps.

8. The Power Control Widget is a good tool for easily turning on and off some of these features (gps, wifi, screen brightness, etc.).

9. From the home screen do the following: menu/settings/About Phone/Battery Use. This graph will show the 10 biggest power users on the phone. It should always be Screen as the top user and the android os, android system, phone standby and phone idle should be the other top users. If there is an app listed you should determine if it’s an app you actually use a lot or do you have a rogue app that needs to be uninstalled.

10. Get Screebl. It will turn your phone off anytime you are not actively using it.

11. If you have either a task killer or an anti-virus app installed, you should uninstall.

Good luck.

BTW, I've pretty much stuck with a P3 kernel v.32 that is a 125-800 low voltage version. It has worked well for me with a lot of different roms.

I've had very good results with the app JuineDefender (I bought the paid version which is ultimate juice). It's main purpose to manage your data connection, which can drain your battery even when your phone is in your pocket. When my phone is not in use, juicedefender shuts down the 3g connection after 2 minutes and will turn it on every 15 minutes to sync mail, then shut down 3g (or wifi) again. You can of course still receive calls and SMS. There are an array of other settings that you can use to fine tune it as well. I have seen a huge improvement, and I keep GPS and Bluetooth running 100% of the time.

Well today I used Clockwork recovery and deleted my delvik cache and battery stats and I'm now at 70% with about 8 hours and 30 min off the charger... OH MY GOD THIS IS GREAT (knock on wood).

Now like I said, i'm using the stock kernel that came with sapphire (its set to 800mhz)

Since I'm getting such amazing battery life I want to go even faster. CCVPS has a bunch of kernels you can download.

Is the stock kernel at medium or low voltage? Because I just want to do a substitute, that way everything runs perfect like it already is.

Any knowledge of what it is?

Glad you got your battery issue under wraps...deleting the stats does wonders...if you're going to change kernels, I'd recommend deleting them again after the change and a charge to 100%...usually the stats start getting wonky after flashing a new rom, or a new kernel. I dont use sapphire but I assume it would be using a standard voltage kernel by default?

are you rooted? you would need a root file explorer and navigate to that directory and delete the batterystats.bin file

Am I rooted?

I don't even know what that means. I think someone told me that Roots were like the code under the system?

Is there a good resource to learn?

Yes check out the Droid Hacks area of this forum, all the guides and documentation you know are there. Make sure you read everything before attempting and know that rooting will violate your TOS with VZW. Just a warning...but yes your phone will be like a new phone once you root.

I'm not surprised if you think those are the only things significantly affecting battery life. You need to look at everything affecting battery life.

Turn off the GPS unless you are actually using it. There are some background apps that can burn a lot of power via a live gps.
Shouldn't be an issue unless the apps are using the receiver without the person's knowledge. I leave GPS on all the time and my battery life is not impacted unless I actively use the GPS receiver.

Yep, I know that. But I included for noob's that leave some GPS active app running all the time. I don't use them so I can't think of the names right now, but the apps that do things based on the phone's location? Locale maybe?
