Firmware issue, Trying to change Build and kernal version to suit aus standard

Ive tried updating the phone but because its 2.1 it will go no further, the phone is from HK and will not load the android market/ update through wifi, i have tried updating the phone via pc and the motorola updater but no luck, if anyone has an answer to how i can change the firmware or reflash it somehow to allow it to work in aus.
