Fastest, smoothest Rom?

So I want a good experience with my Moto Droid. I had it rooted, but it had a number of issues with various roms (cyanogen, bugless beast, and droidmod) I then tried unrooted 2.1 with launcherpro and it was very smooth and fast. However, I like root and the options available. Is there a Rom (maybe Froyo?) that keeps lag and slowness down to a minimum, comparable to 2.1?

Loaded question indeed, as ROMS are built on top of an OS. Froyo is faster than 2.1, so I would say a 2.2 ROM is faster than a 2.1 ROM, but froyo is froyo, no matter how you scoop it. SD v 2 ROM looks the best IMO. Kernels can play a role in ROM/OS speed however : )
