Facebook Updated With Features Long Requested

It seems Facebook has been periodically updating their Android app, and usually we wouldn’t write about them, but one feature many of us have been waiting for is here. The ability to chat; requested since the original Facebook app was released, and was only possible via third party solutions… well not anymore. This update just became official today, and not only do you get the chat feature, but you also get push notification, something I personally have needed and wanted for the last few months.

Anyone already running this updated Facebook software? How do you like it?

I've got it and I'm trying to use it more. Right now Bloo is the FB app with the stock one I use as there are things I can do there that I can't on Bloo (and vice versa). If the default FB works great, I'll drop Bloo.

Wow, thanks for posting this as I wouldn't have known otherwise. It's great they did this, although I wish the chat showed up at the bottom of the screen (Although I suppose that could be a problem with smaller screens)

Anyone else not have settings for push notifications?

I still have notification times of only 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or Never -- but I am still getting notifications.

Not sure what is going on here though.

Not sure what you're asking here.

I still have the settings for push notifications there.... same intervals you mentioned.

Not a bad update at all, but I've still got a few complaints.

There doesn't appear to be any light/sound/vibrate for when you get a new chat message. Also, it logs in by default, and there's no message letting you know that you're successfully offline when you choose that option. Clicking chat again loads up the list of contacts again, so I'm guessing that's how you go back online...? Hoping there are better options for the chat in a future update.

As for the push notifications, when viewing notifications in the app and another one comes in, it shows up right away, but causes the list to reload completely, and it's easy to lose your place in the list if a few come in at once. Also, my biggest complaint from the start, I'd like notifications of new comments/likes/etc. They appear to still only support messages, events, and pokes, all of which I get way less often than comments.

Guess I'll continue to rely on TweetDeck for notifications in the bar of comments and likes, but this app has definietly come a long way since the D1 came out, so I'll keep waiting. :-D

I agree. It's progressing so that's always a good thing :)

So the notification settings in the Settings screen controls the "Comments & Likes" notifications I am getting as well?

Sorry for sounding so conusing. :icon_eek:

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure those intervals are for how often the feed is updated. It's above the option for notifications, and, by definition, push notifications are "pushed" from the server to the device as they arrive (think of your gmail app), so they don't require a set interval for polling the server.

Also, that interval option is under General Settings, not Notification Settings.

that's the understanding I have.... but then again I don't get a notification in the notification bar for comments and likes... only for messages and friend requests.

One more gripe, when you've been chatting with someone, then close the chat, leave chat and/or the app, then return to chat, the conversation you closed appears in Active Conversations again. Slightly annoying, but not the worst thing in the world.
