External Lapel Mic

I would like to attach an external lapel mic to my Google Galaxy Nexus phone. My search hasn't unearthed what I am looking for. Perhaps I am just overthinking it.

What I am looking to do is be able to quickly plug in so I can record a speech when I get up. My thinking is that an external mic will provide better audio than the onboard mic.

* Can the phone handle an external mic?

* Is there anything I need to know/be concerned with? / Can I just go out and purchase any mic?

I can't speak specifically to your model phone, but virtually all phones now support an external wired headset that provides sound output for phone conversations and also mike input for speech. They are also mostly all sporting Micro-USB ports and these ports should be able to carry a microphone input.
