Error when trying to turn into mobile hotspot?

I have turned on the mobile hot spot option, but once I connect to it on my laptop and try to go to internet it just redirects me to a verizon site where an error 500 just comes up. Any help? I also, think I've heard about some other way to access this by hacking or something?

not to ask a stupid question, but do you pay the hotspot fee every month??? Yes you can use the phone for wifi if you are rooted.

No I do not, I was never told about that when I bought it. Is there any way around it to get wifi for free?
