Emails "Content-Transfer-Encoding" format unknown

I have a HTC Incredible (model ADR6300) from Verizon, firmware 2.1-update1, using ActiveSynch to an Exchange 2003 Sp2 OWA. I can send emails to internal adresses fine and I can reply to any internal or external email fine. Any emails originating from the Droid to an external (non-corporate) address fail to be delivered, getting "The format of the Content-Transfer-Encoding 'utf-8' is unknown". It doesn't seem to matter what the external address is (we've tried emails to Verizon, Gmail, and Yahoo), they all fail. We have numerous iPhones using ActiveSynch to the same OWA with no issues.

Update -

The issue seems to be with the default email app, as Touchdown and Moxier clients both work.
