where do you find out the settings that allow your email to be either pushed or fetched??

If you are sync'd they will be push/pulled. Is this gmail you are working with?

Settings > acct & sync> auto-sync

yes it is gmail. So this means I dont have to know this?? They are synched

Gmail is pushed unless you've specifically set it up so your polling.

great, but I would still like to know how to go into the phone and check this. Can someone please tell me how I can check these settings

You would have to decompile the gmail app and examine the code. Wouldn't be too hard really.
