Email displaying notification and vibrating, but not making noise

The thread title says it all, when I get an email, a notification pops up in the status bar, but it doesn't make a sound, which I would like. I was initially using the Yahoo Mail app, where an incoming email would cause the phone to vibrate and display the notification, but no sound. So I tried the pre-installed email app, where the exact same problem occured. In both instances, I made sure the settings within the app and the settings on the phone directed an audible vibrating notification, and the volume was up all the way, but I still can not get the sound to work. Any suggestions?

Did you select a rington under notification settings?

Yes I did, I have one set for regular notifications, and a different one set in the email app.
