Editing screens?

Pardon me if my terminology is a bit off...I just got the phone this morning!

On one of my screens I've managed to add two contacts for speed dialing. The screen has an icon for each person.

I want to delete one of them. How do I do that?

Similarly, another screen has a message from HTC. I want to delete this message...HOW?

Long press on the contact and drag it to the bottom of the screen and drop it on the tray tab. You'll see the tab display a trash can and turn red when you drag the contact over it.
