I personally have NEVER had any trouble with ROM Manager/CMRecovery. I think it's nicer in so much as you don't have to rename every rom you want to try to "update.zip" that way you know what rom it is.
Anyways, anyone remember the old "DroidRootHelper" app that was first written when SPRecovery was still around v 0.13.x? All the trouble people had with that one will make me do the same as all the others here. Don't EVER use a 'one-step' root app (unless it's put out by DroidMod, lol).
So use the links given for rooting any droid 1, it's in my sig as well, and if you need to unroot, there's a link for that there as well.
