Droid X GPS without cellular question

Does Droid X have True-GPS? If I buy a Droid X, and not activate the cellular ... would the GPS still work? I've read it has both aGPS (assisted) and sGPS (simulaneous). So I wasn't sure if cellular is required. I know that sounds weird lol. But I really don't need it for the phone. But I'd like to have everything else.

Yes, It has true GPS, but without the cell network, you have no ability to download map information.

Would it work to have the maps installed on a SD card or something?

There are several GPS apps that use the SD card to store maps, but none free that I know of. Does it really matter? GPS is the battery killer, not the cell radio.

I'm doing exactly what you're trying to do. I have a droid x and I use satellite gps. Google app seems best to me. You have to download maps on wifi. You can't change your route on the fly. There are other free programs but they don't have navigation. The nav program will pause music when it gives directions.

I think if you root your droid you can copy maps to the google maps dir. I just haven't rooted my droid yet.

It's not the battery I'm worried about. I was just trying to avoid the monthly charges lol. Basically to use it like a beefed up ipod touch ... with bigger screen, GPS and cameras.

The new ipod has those but they're pretty limited.

No he is right, the gps will eat the battery. If you use sat only that helps, but it when the screen brightness goes to max being outside. Plus I use BT to my stereo. A 1hour trip will use a lot of battery.

The solution is to get the car dock, or just a car charger. There are free map programs but I don't know of any free nav programs.

What monthy charges? You have a Droid on Verizon, which means you have unlimited data as per your contract. If you download 1Mb or 1Tb, you'll be charged the exact same thing....

Care to explain that logic? If you just wanted a PDA/GPS, wouldnt it have made more sense just to buy a PDA and GPS?

You're going to pay a hefty ETF to cancel your service, and end up with a cell phone that doesnt work....

Do they make pdas any more? Plue droids have a ton of apps. And if you bought 2 devices you would have twice as much stuff to put in your pocket and buy accessories for and charge at night. It makes just as much sense as an itouch and you can buy the phone for 500 or less with no cotract.

I don't have the Droid X yet. I was wondering if it would work to buy one without a contract, or service. I don't use a phone enough, to pay $80 a month or whatever it is. So to me, it'd be worth full price. Plus I was trying to just have like an all-in-one device. So I wouldn't need seperate GPS, camera, pda. Not to mention the games and other apps.

Maybe i'll just wait to see what all the new 7 inch android tablets will amount to. Most of them have aGPS only though.

The latest version of Google Maps did include the ability to cache maps for a route I believe. If not, I know it is supposedly coming at some point. There are applications in the market that you can purchase that do function like full offline GPS standalone devices.

If it does work, which I'm not saying it does, you're gonna have to pay for someone to have international maps (TomTom or something similar).
