Droid Incredible Proximity Sensor

I've had a HTC Droid Incredible for a little over two years now and have been pretty happy with it. However recently it's proximity sensor has stopped working leading to many muted and lost calls. I've looked on several other forums for answers to this predicament and not found anything that really works. Is this a hardware issue? Is there some sort of software patch or loop I can go through to fix this? I would really rather not have to buy a new phone when this phone is still - for the most part - working alright. Any help or advice is much appreciated!
