DROID Continuously "Searching for Signal"

OK so my buddy gave me his old droid and it just stopped receiving signal, it has the little 'x' above the bars, airplane mode is off, I have already hard reset, the bill is paid, and I have never had a problem with my service in this area before. Also my phone is not rooted. Help please, I hope I posted this in the right place, thank you in advance, I will search the forums for a similar thread but I really need my phone and I'm hoping someone can help me before I come across it.

You have activated it with a carrier?
What did they say when you called them?

Check your signal strength... I think you can do this depending on the android version you have and it can be see from setting>about phone>status>"Signal strength"

If your in "good" service area you should not see anything more negative than -110 or else you will struggle making phone calls and other services.

Make sure your phone is activated also... this could be a reason why it is not detecting service.

Well the problem fixed itself a couple days ago I have no idea how or what the problem was thanks for your help tho. I intend to be more active on the forum now that I have the application.
