Droid can't...

Youre getting way too into the flash thing. Every website that runs flash will have to be updated. That's going to take forever. By the time 10% of websites do that, we will have native flash support. So why on earth would you want this instead of real flash support?

Here's some info on what could be done if Android had SVG support, as well as some info on SVG itself.

I think everyone else is getting way into the flash thing. I only really talked about it in my first post. As a web designer who deals with SEO every day I'm actually VERY anti-Flash. If you'd actually check out the link I just posted you'd realize that it says NOTHING about Flash. Here, for those quick to judge I guess I'll post direct quotes from the site.

It has always surprised me that the mobile industry has not made better use of SVG. On the face of it, SVG is perfectly suited to publishing rich content on mobile devices for a number of reasons:

  • It is a compact way of representing vector graphics
  • SVG graphics (in keeping with the name) can be scaled to arbitrary sizes, removing some of issues with screen dimension proliferation on mobile devices
  • It is an open standard
  • Device support is better than you might think (more on this later)
  • Because SVG is based on XML, many existing XML tools can be used to generate content

There, sorry I said anything that might imply the Droid isn't absolutely perfect in every possible way. Some people need to calm down just a tad.

You brought it up in your topic. You said it cant run svg so iphone beat us to flash. So now you are going off topic of your own thread?

Nobody said nor implied the droid isnt perfect. I could point out 10 things wrong with it. But you came up witht he post saying it cant and we lost to iphone because of a javascript trick. Implying that the iphone beat the droid to flash, which is a lie.

Don't get all personal and hurt. This is a board of open discussion and thats all im doing. You should welcome an opposing point of view.

well, josh, you knew thread title was inflammatory. you got the attention you wanted. since the droid is getting native flash most people won't gaf about svg. that's all i have to say about that. have a good day. :)

There are just some people that are never satisfied... Rather than being happy with what they have or what they can do they prefer to look at what they don't have or can't do... Just some peoples nature.

Many of these people also feel that anything they think is 'great' should be considered so by everyone which then leads them to thinking that develops ect. should instantly support/use such things. Anything less is seen by them as not acceptable (as evident by the thread title). Had the OP wanted to open an actual discussion or had his intention been to only bring this technology to peoples attention he would have chose a more neutral title.

I'm not hurt at all. I enjoy a good conversation. Off topic? My very first sentence was that the Droid doesn't support SVG. I then backed that up with a good example, which was Flash being converted into SVG via clever javascript then being run on mobile browsers that support SVG.

As for the being beaten? It was a joke, didn't realize everyone would get so upset and take it as a personal loss. I guess I'll have to start clarifying that in the future. Besides, try to view one of his javascript/SVG examples right now, at this very moment with your Droid. Then ask a friend on an iPhone to do it. :P (Note the emoticon, helping emphasize that this was meant to be humorous, not an attack on you, this website, the Droid, Google, Android, Verizon, Motorola, the US government, your family or anyone else)

Can we talk about SVG or should I start a new thread based on it, without any references or comparisons to any competitors and void of all humor so we can have an "open" discussion..? :P (Again, note the emoticon, helping emphasize that this was meant to be humorous, not an attack on you, this website, the Droid, Google, Android, Verizon, Motorola, the US government, your family or anyone else)

So no one at all thinks that the benefits of SVG would be nice to have on the Droid..?

Well,

because its not flash and does support higher res graphics. For devs who do not like flash I guess? But flash is compact and can embed just about anything.

I dont know man im trying to come up with a reason but you win! lol Theres no need since we will have flash. Flash is the standard.

Can we talk about SVG or should I start a new thread based on it...

what's the point of svg if the phone gets....full flash support...:icon_ banana:

Those are benefits. Web layouts with images that automatically shrink or grow depending on browser size, making sure all websites look amazing at all resolutions, viewing graphics at ANY size and having them not pixelated or choppy...

carbine: "making sure all websites look amazing at all resolutions, viewing graphics at ANY size and having them not pixelated or choppy"
i suppose you have issues with things being choppy and pixilated then

Ok, I'm done. Think what you want. If you want to all gang up on me and tell me how useless a web standard is because the Droid doesn't have it and an iPhone user found a way to get flash to work on their overpriced trendy piece of hell then whatever. I'm done with this thread. Go ahead and feel all self righteous or whatever you kids do to make yourself feel better. I'm gonna go eat some eggs and have a beer, STILL thinking that my phone would be better off supporting an open web standard giving me more features.

Had you put this in your OP or worded it as such then a very good discussion would have come. But as your OP read it came off (to many) as an attack against the Droid or, at the very least a comparison that seemed to favor the iPhone.

Worded as you have recently put it you have brought about good points. This could be very useful and convenient. But it is a matter of which will technology can gain enough market-share to be worth supporting. Perhaps this will catch up.
