My wife and I are going to upgrade to the Droid 2 next month. We both will be getting the $30 internet package. Our question is can we use our phone as a wireless hotspot? That is, can we use it to surf the web on a laptop. If so, does it cost extra?

Thanks! And sorry if it's a dumb question!

It does cost extra. However if you root, you can install hotspot apps that work for free.

Rooting is gaining root access to your phone. Think if it as administrator access where you can make changes to your phone that you are locked out of doing when it is brand new. Things like overclocking, changing settings, installing or uninstalling certain apps, and enabling free wifi tether.

There are about a million threads on this forum that will tell you all you need to know if you do a search for "root" or "rooting". Time to make a pot of coffee cause there is a lot to read!
