Droid 2 moving to Scotland

Hi all,
I will be relocating with my droid 2 to Scotland in a month and a half and was looking for a service provider/ plan. I rarely call people and am more on text and especially on apps (skype, live profile etc). I know I can unlock it globally but was told that would not be cost effective since I am going to be there for such a long period. Any advice would be great.

Call Verizon Global support.
Tell them you need the unlock code.
Insert a non-Vodafone SIM card.
Enter the unlock code.
Done.

As for local carriers, Vodafone UK or Orange have the best coverage, I guess. T-Mobile is also pretty solid (no; not the US T-Mobile).
