Droid 1 use in Europe

Please forgive my ignorance. I have searched the forums, but still have questions. I am not very tech savvy.

I am leaving for Europe in 2 days, and know that my Droid 1 won't work for phone calls. What I am curious about are these questions:

Can I use the phone for email. (we will have wi-fi)

How do I shut off all incoming phone calls? I do not want to incur any roaming fees.

If I power down the phone entirely while in Europe, is it possible that friends could still call my number and I would incur huge roaming fees?

Do I need to contact Verizon, so they don't shut my phone off?

What else am I forgetting, or should i just leave the phone at home?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Email is data and data is supported over WiFi so, yes.

You can disable roaming. You can also turn on airplane mode (and still enable WiFi).

Not with the phone off.
